The Lab conducts analysis and reports results for all coal and gas testing needs in the Coal and Coal Seam Gas industries. The lab provides high quality and cost effective solutions pertaining to coal and gas evaluation, its quality, beneficiation requirements and coal and gas utilization characteristics. Our expert services are performed by highly skilled personnel with state-of the art equipment for characterization of coals through chemical and petrographic analysis. COAL analysis -
- Proximate analysis:
Inherent moisture, Ash content, Volatile matter content and Fixed Carbon .
- Ultimate analysis:
Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen : Are important in coking, combustion, gasification and liquefaction. These elements (with the exception of nitrogen) are also found in the mineral matter and moisture contained in most coal samples. Nitrogen : Is important as it represents a possible source of environmental pollution upon combustion. Forms of sulphur:(Pyritic, Sulfate and Organic sulphur)The determination of the two commonly recognized forms of sulphur (pyrite and andsulphate) which are associated with coal sulphur.
- Ash Composition:(XRF and ICP)
A compositional analysis of ash is used in describing the quality of coal for its complete characterisation.
- Phosphorus ( P )
Phosphorus can affect the coke-making process negatively and reduce the quality of the production of steel.
- Sulphur Analysis:
Is important as it represents a possible source of environmental pollution upon combustion. Thus, a coal with low sulphur is preferred for combustion purposes.
- Gross calorific value (GCV)
Is the number of heat units (MJ/kg) measured when coal is combusted under standard conditions. This heat value will include water vapour and other compounds (acid forming gases) which normally escape to the atmosphere when combustedHard Grove Grindability Index (HGI) The characterisation of the relative grindability of coal. The hard grove grindability index is used empirically to estimate the capacity and power consumption, given specified product fineness.
- Gieseler fluidity(Constant torque gieselerplastometer)
The determination of the plastic behaviour of coal when heated.
- Ash fusion temperature
Is a measure of the 4 critical temperatures (initial deformation, softening, hemispherical and fluid temperature) which coal/coke ash passes through when heated at a specified rate in a reducing or oxidizing atmosphere.
- Gray-King &Carbonisation Assays of Coal
The purpose of the gray-king coke test, is to assess the caking properties of a type of coal or blend of coals by carbonising under standard conditions.
- Relative density
This method is used for obtaining the relative density (specific gravity) of coal or some other material from its loss in weight when weighed in water.
- Screen analysis
The determination of particle size distribution.
- Total moisture
Total moisture is the sum of surface moisture and inherent moisture. The coal sample is dried in an air-oven under prescribed conditions and calculated from the loss in mass.
- Hygroscopic moisture
The determination of the ability of material to absorb/release moisture in the atmosphere under controlled conditions. The actual °C, dew point, wet point and %Humidity can be recorded on an continues basis.
- Dense medium separation (Sink/Float) with TBE
The determination of the float and sink characteristics of raw coal products and exploration drill cores in a density range e.g. RD 1.30 to RD 2.90.
- Grain Density or Real Density of coal
- Maceral analysis:(in accordance with ISO Standard 7404-3, 1994)
Macerals are microscopically recognizable organic constituents of coal and can be grouped together into three maceral groups: vitrinite, liptinite and inertinite, as well as some subdivisions.
- Reflectivity (Rank)
Determination of rank (in accordance with ISO Standard 7404-5, 1994) The property that is normally used as an indicator of rank, independent of the maceral composition, is the reflectance of the vitrinite in the coal.
- Calculation of coal petrographic parameters
Two indices, the Composition Balance Index (CBI) and the Rank parameter (RoR) are calculated from the petrographic analysis. The CBI is the ratio of the inert components in a coal to the optimum inert components for the strongest coke possible for a given rank of coal.
- Prediction of coking properties
The CBI and RoR are used to predict coking properties in terms of various drum indices using correlation curves.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL analysis of coal –
Adsorption Isotherm Analysis(Coal &/or Shale Gas Saturation Analysis, PVT analysis) Gas Content Evaluation for Coal And Shale Reservoir (Desorption Studies As Per GRI Manual). Using the direct method for estimation of Insitu Gas Content in coal, can quantify the gas content of a coal seam. we send temperature controlled core sample collection canisters to the field. field staff monitors and records the time that elapses in the field from when the core is cut by the drill and when it is sealed into the collection container. Back at the lab the samples are maintained at the site ground temperature of the seam and the gas volume recovered over time is measured this is the desorbed gas content. The lost gas quantity is extrapolated from the desorption curve based on the time measured between coring and containment of the core in the field. use of the rod mill to crush the coal cores to recover and measure the residue gas. The total amount of gas is the sum of the lost gas, the desorbed gas, and the residue gas.
Gas Compositional Analysis
Gas Chromatograph with Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) and Flame Photometric Detector (FPD) for the analysis of biogas containing mixture of gases (CH4, CO2, H2S, N2,H2, O2 and traces of water vapor). The range for measurement of these gases: Our Lab is at present conduction the Methane Adsorption Isotherm Studies and some of the related analysis as stated above for Reliance India Ltd (RIL). Methane content and adsorption isotherm are the most important parameters for the production of coal bed methane. It is also influenced by proximate, ultimate, maceral composition, grain density and vitrinite reflectance of coal.
